The structure of hair is like the scales on the skin of a fish that has overlapping scales around a central core called the cortical. The way your hair looks can make or ruin your appearance completely. Smoother overlapping more shiny and smooth the hair looks. This also leads to easy combing while a tangled or roughed-up structure makes the hair look rough and dull.

Dry Hair Care

Dry hair looks brittle and feels “crunchy” to the touch. There are many causes of dry hair, ranging from genetics (if mom and dad have dry hair, you probably will too) to hair treatments.

For dry hair care follow this treatment once in two weeks: Take two tablespoons of olive oil. Warm it and massage on your head. Cover your hair with poly bag and then cover this bag with a warm towel. This will give steaming effect to the hair. Keep it there for half an hour and then rinse and shampoo.

Another weapon we have against dry hair is proper nutrition, so drink plenty of water. Also be sure that your diet contains the proper essential fatty acids. We forget that hair health is a reflection of nutrition as well. It often surprises people that malnutrition causes dry hair, but it’s right up there with other culprits like overwashing, heat and chemical damage.

Inactive oil glands can cause dry hair. If you have dry hair as a result of dry skin, consider washing your hair fewer times each week (every two or three days).

Dry-hair conditioners are usually paired with dry-hair shampoos. These shampoos often have emollient ingredients in them to be gentler on hair than traditional shampoos. They shouldn’t strip the hair of its natural oils. You should avoid frequent shampooing for the same reason (no stripping). Once or twice a week is usually enough to shampoo dry hair. In between shampoos, you can still cleanse your hair with “conditioner washing.” Just wet your hair, comb conditioner through thoroughly and then rinse. This is usually helpful to people who exercise frequently and need to rinse perspiration from the scalp, but don’t want to dry their hair out.

Hair care tips for dry hair also include conditioners. Conditioning during showers (even when you do not shampoo), conditioning before bed and conditioning when just sitting at home watching television are all needed to help rehydrate dry hair. The conditioners you use on dry hair need to be very thick in nature. Hair dresses and mayonnaise style treatments are perfect for sealing the moisture and oils into the hair shaft. The more you condition, the more moisture will be retained.
