Varicose Veins Surgery

Varicose veins (or varix) are the swollen veins caused by damaged valves that allow blood to pass as it returns to the heart. If these valves malfunction, accumulation of blood in the veins results causing varicose veins to form. Causes are established as pregnancy, obesity, lack of or inadequate exercise, and standing or sitting in one place for long. Legs form the areas of the body most affected by varicose veins. While natural ways of preventing and eliminating varicose veins exist, it is clear that in some circumstances the definite cure is surgery.

Surgical Treatment Procedures

Varicose veins may not present a medical threat to your general health and may die off through dietary and exercise treatments. Before you settle for surgery, be sure your problem is beyond other methods of treatment and don’t be attracted by the cosmetic body enhancements resulting from a surgical operation. But this doesn’t apply to all individuals all the time. So various surgical procedures may be employed to treat your varicose veins. Sclerotherapy (microscelerotherapy), laser surgery, catheter-assisted and minimally invasive procedures, surgical vein stripping, ambulatory phlebotomy and endoscopic vein surgery exist. Again, it doesn’t follow that any of them is good on everyone so individual patients may even have combined procedures, or combine a surgical solution with self-care therapies at home.

Trivex System

This procedure uses an illumination feature that is unique to light up the area under your skin so the varicose vein is readily visible. The surgeon then quickly and with high precision targets and removes the vein. He or she then confirms with their eyes that the veins are completely extracted.

Endovenous Laser Treatment

Open surgery, an older method of treating varicose veins, is till in use by some doctors. But it’s clear what is in vogue and works is the Endovenous Laser Treatment. In this procedure, an aesthetic is first administered on the spot where operation is to take place (the site of varicose vein). The surgeon then inserts a needle into the large saphenous vein located near the patient’s knee. The doctor then proceeds, guided by ultrasound to insert a guide wire right through the needle ensuring that it goes through to your groin to create passage for laser and catheter that will be placed in the targeted vein. After this is done, the laser light is turned on and slowly starts removing the laser fiber resulting in the collapse of the targeted vein that retracts. The outcome is vaporizing of the blood hitherto contained in the vein effectively stopping blood flow to happen through the vein. Several advantages go with this treatment. Firstly, recovery time is very short unlike in traditional vein stripping and litigation. Secondly no scars form on the site of surgery and the procedure is very short, usually taking an hour or shorter. this procedure is known to be 98% effective. Observation follow up is only two hours and you go on with your normal life after that. It’s important to note that direct reconstruction of damaged veins that arise out of deep vein conditions or diseases is done on limited basis only as it is considered experimental treatment that shouldn’t be done often.

Simple Laser Treatment

This treatment is most suitable as a solution to spider veins and tiny varicose veins that are normally situated immediately underneath the skin surface. Having to undergo several sessions every 6 to 12 weeks or as your doctor prescribes. This treatment is effective in treating blood circulation. The patient then waits for the larger veins to be treated through specialized surgery like endovenous or sclerotherapy treatment.

Litigation and Stripping

Litigation is the tying off of varicose veins while stripping refers to removal of varicose veins. They’re both standard surgical treatment. However, they’ve now been overtaken by radiofrequency, stab avulsion and laser treatments.

When is Surgery Required?

Consider surgery if your varicose veins have not responded to treatment you’ve carried out at home and when the symptoms become increasingly bothersome and disruptive. If concerned about the way varicose veins make your legs look, try other kinds of treatments but not surgery.
