Split Ends and Hair loss? Not a chance!

A year ago, my mom’s hair was steadily falling out and the hair that she had left was riddled with split ends. So, we decided to find out some ways to prevent any more of this, or even reverse the process. Our topic: split ends and hair loss, of course.

First we looked up the causes of hair loss and ways to stop it.

Some hair loss situations could be the cause of the stress of an illness or surgery and was only a temporary condition. Another cause of hair loss was a large hormonal change, especially if the thyroid gland was either overproducing or not producing enough hormones. This could cause hair loss until the chemical imbalance was fixed or regulated. Certain medicines or even infections could also cause hair loss. Medicine could be changed, if possible, to one that did not result in hair loss, and infections could be treated and eliminated in order to regain normal hair growth.

Another habit that could cause hair loss was the way that people treated their hair. If hair was often put up in pony tails, pig tails, or cornrows, hair could begin to fall out. This pulling on the hair could result in scars on the scalp which would then not allow hair to grow back, but if this was stopped before the scarring of the scalp, then hair growth could then return to normal. Being undernourished was yet another cause of hair loss because the body reserved all of it’s nutrients for more vital functions and so the hair was also undernourished and would then die.

Some remedies for hair loss were natural. There were, of course, some medicinal remedies as well, but that would have to be discussed with a doctor. One home remedy for hair loss was to massage the scalp for a few minutes daily. This prompted better circulation in the scalp which could in turn stimulate hair growth. The next remedy was an aromatherapy type. This included mixing six drops of lavender and bay essential oils in four ounces of either almond oil, sesame oil, or sesame oil. This treatment, used by aroma therapists was used to stimulate the circulation in the scalp, was then left for twenty minutes before being rinsed out. Yet another home remedy that traditionally worked well was using aloe vera. Some aloe vera gel was to be mixed with a little wheat germ oil and coconut oil. This was often used as a shampoo because the properties of aloe vera and the other ingredients would cleanse the pores of the scalp and healing any scalp injuries that could be preventing hair growth.

For split ends, there was some useful information as well.

The signs of unhealthy, and split ended, hair was that hair stood out more than usual and was more rough, course to the touch. This was especially common in people who straightened their hair often or used a blow dryer consistently.

To prevent split ends, professionals recommended that brushes with plastic bristles be eliminated, as this could be very hard on hair and break it off. Hair should not be shampooed ever day either because this could dry out the hair by removing the oils from it, and therefore causing the ends to split more easily. When styling was absolutely necessary with a heated tool, it was recommended that a leave-in conditioner be applied. This would protect the ends of the hair from becoming dried out and unbecoming while keeping the blow dryer at least four inches from the hair. Regular trims, ever four to six weeks, were also recommended as this would enable hair to grow unhindered by split ends, which would be cut off, and prevented the split ends from traveling up the shaft of the hair. It was a great idea to condition hair at least two times a week with a deep conditioner that will hydrate the ends of the hair, eliminating the possibility of split ends.

So, no more split ends and no more hair loss!
