So, I wanted to be a hairstylist. It was more work than I thought!
I found that for different types of faces, there were different types of hairdos that could be or could not be used.
First, you have to know which shape of face that you have. To do so, I measure the widest part of the forehead, horizontally at the top of the cheekbones, horizontally at jaw level and lastly from the hair line to the chin. If the face is an oval, the length will be about one and a half times longer than the width. If the face is round then the length and width will be very close. If the face is square then the width of the forehead and jaw are about the same, and if the face is heart shaped then the measurements of the forehead or cheekbones will be the largest and the jaw will be the smallest.
I will explain now what all of this means. A round face is generally best with a longer hairstyle that has some volume, keeping the chin from being too exposed. This type of face can also accommodate the hair when pulled back, but it is best to leave some strands of hair falling around the face, generally above the chin and around the cheeks, to offset the roundness of the face. In some carefully cut cases, a round face can also utilize a light bang, if not cut too far to the sides. Large layers that will frame the face attractively are usually best for this facial type.
The next shape, which just so happens to be my favorite for reasons you will see in just a moment, is the oval shaped face. This shape can easily be accompanied by any hair cut under the sun, no matter how short or how long. There are a few guidelines to this though. It is best not to have a haircut that entails many pieces of hair falling into the face because this will detract from the natural shape of the face.
The next facial type is a square. This facial type is best when accompanied by many layers and hair that is longer than the chin. This helps to soften the line of the jaw and give a more feminine, rather than angular, look. Chin length bobs and full bangs are to be especially avoided with these types of faces because they will accentuate the angular pieces of the face. Parts down the middle of the hair are also extremely bad for square faced people for the same reasons.
The last facial type is heart shaped. This facial structure generally calls for bangs that will take away from the prominence of the chin and forehead as well as a long and loose haircut. This will keep from accenting the bottom of the face as much as many other haircuts would.
Oddly, some faces are actually a mix of all of the above mentioned. In cases such as that, it is imperative that the stylist (me!) make sure to accentuate all of the pros of your face. This can be a bit tricky but every face is different and every face has good things about it. With a good stylist (hopefully me!), there’s no such thing as no good hair cut for you! You just need the right one!
Do you see why I feel that being a hair stylist is more complicated than most think? I assume you do! So make sure that you remember: oval can use anything, heart shaped faced haircuts should work to keep from accenting the chin and forehead with long hair and bangs, square faced haircuts should be layered and parted towards the side to avoid accenting the angular planes of the face and give a more feminine look, and round faces should have longer hair with strands that take away from the prominent chin. Simple, right? I thought so! You see, I have my work cut out for me! |
