What Is Head Lice

Misconceptions abound about what exactly is head lice. head lice are very small bugs that cannot fly and attach themselves to strands of hair and your scalp. They feed on small quantities of blood this is why you will find many of them attached to the scalp as it makes feeding so much easier for them. Lice are also called parasites and they can make you itch and scratch a lot causing infection sometimes or just skin irritation.

Symptoms Of Head Lice

This is another great head lice faqs as many people have it confused with things it\'s not. Lice can run very quickly through strands of hair and are not very easy to see. Small sores or red bumps on the shoulders neck and scalp are tell tale signs of head lice. General scratching is also something that you will want to look at as this is a major hint that you could have head lice. Lice eggs are also known as nits these nits attach themselves to strands of hair and are oval shaped, clear, tiny and white dots. To find them you will have to search strands of hair. if one family member has them their is a good chance they all could have them. So checking everyone is a very good idea.

Treatments For Head Lice

There are many different treatments that are available for head lice and new products are being introduced all the time. let\'s look over some of the most effective ones. Many over the counter shampoos are available at your local pharmacy that get rid of head lice. Most of these will include a fine tooth comb to help you pick out the nits that are sticking to the strands of your hair. Lotions are also very popular, but like that shampoos they carry pesticides and chemicals so check with your health care provider so you will know if they are safe for you and your family to use. More and more companies are coming out with pesticide free shampoos to combat head lice which is being welcome by parents and health care providers.

Many alternatives such as home remedies exist, but how effective they are remain to be seen. Remember to wash all clothing, combs, brushes in boiling water to make sure you kill any head lice that has attached themselves to these things. Only hot water will kill them. Make sure they soak a couple of hours before use them again. Even after shampooing remember in a couple weeks to check again to make sure you killed them and get the nits out. If you don\'t you may have to do it all over.

Preventing Head Lice

Probably the most asked question about head lice is how do we prevent head lice in the first place. There are many different ways to do it. First don\'t share clothing, brushes, hats with friends and especially from people who you don\'t know. Head lice can be transferred very easily so taking this precaution is a very good first step.

If kids are staying overnight somewhere have them pack their own towels to use. This way they have less of a chance getting head lice when they travel to a friends house or stay somewhere.
