Hair Combs: Which is Which?

“Find me a comb!” my mentor exclaimed. I sighed. I needed to find hair combs that would fit her needs as a hair stylist, something that other people would use as well. So I had to do a little research!

The first of the hair combs that was presented was called a big hearted comb. The first of these combs was ideal for parting the hair; it had a shortened first tooth. Each hole in the body of the comb was exactly a centimeter apart, so it made it possible to use it as a measuring device. This comb was heat resistant up to 428 degrees Fahrenheit and 220 degrees Celsius. The teeth were also strong a durable, so would not have to be worried about in the usage of combing thick hair. This comb also came in red, white, and black. The second of these big hearted combs was also heat resistant, the holes in the body could also be used as a measuring device, and the body was flexible (thanks to the holes in the body) but this comb has rounded teeth. This allowed the user to maintain equal tension on the hair, even when the angle of combing is changed, and is made to mimic the feel of using fingers instead.

Next in the hair combs category were the cutting combs. These combs were made for stylists when they were cutting hair. The first of these combs, like the big hearted brushes, had the parting, shortened first tooth, was heat resistant up to 220 degrees Celsius, and could be used as a measuring tooth. This cutting comb was also flexible thanks to the holes in the body. This brush differed from the big hearted brush in the fact that its teeth become closer together on the right side. This enabled the stylist (or person since this comb could very well be used at home as well) to use whichever side will suit the person’s hair better. This comb came in pink, granite, red, white, and camel colors. The other combs were the same but they had various differences in the spacing of the teeth on the comb, some smaller and some wider to fit different hair types.

The ion series of combs came next. These were much like the others, some like the cutting combs and some like the big hearted combs, in both appearance and function but these were all made of tourmaline mixed in with the resin of the comb, meaning that they were made of a material that had ions in it. This meant that the hair, after being combed by these types of hair combs, would lie down more flatly that normal after being combed. So this type of comb was particularly well used on curly or naturally frizzy hair as an additive to whatever solutions were used for reducing the frizz in the hair.  These came in tourmaline white and blue.

Next were the tail combs. These combs had the appearance of a regular comb with a long, pointed tail coming off of one end. They also retain the usage of the parting head (the shortened first tooth of the comb), the heat resisting abilities of the big hearted, cutting, and ion combs, and the measuring ability in the holes of the body of the comb which allow flexibility in the comb. The tails on these allowed for another way to part the hair or to comb hair, if hair was frizzy (this could help to stop split ends). One the first comb, the comb itself was curved slightly which could be useful, depending on the user’s preference, and the teeth were closer to each other by 1/100 of a millimeter as they went down the comb. This allowed for even tension of all of the hair that was being combed at once. This comb came in white and red. The second tail comb was the same as the last, merely straight instead of curved and of a different style. Of course, these combs also came in varying degrees of tooth proximity, once more depending on the user’s preference or needs from the brush.

So, there are hair combs for everyone! Even my mentor!
