With straighteners it is important not to let the hair remain too long on the heated surface, or you can burn and damage the hair. Think of straightening hair as you would of ironing clothes: you never want to leave the material exposed to heat for too long, and therefore want to use smooth continuous motions and not let the straightener sit in one place for too long.
