If the Barrette fits!

Last year’s prom was hectic. You see, my sister was homecoming queen. So, of course, she wanted to look perfect. Down to the last barrette.

“I need a barrette, Mom!” she’d cried but my mom had been busy and so I’d been sentenced to help her find one. We went onto the internet to look up several kinds. We found six that she liked.

The first that we’d found was made of Tourmaline, Indian agate, Garnet, and Mother of pearl. It was a bronzed color with a flowery bronze piece and a jewel right in the middle of it. It was a large one and said that it was made by skilled artisans. Intriguing, right? I rather thought so. Usually they’re just made by machines!

The second was available in three colors: gold, black, and white. It was rather cute as well. It looked like a bow with a buckle covered in little shining stones in the middle and guaranteed that it would stay in all day. That was good! My sister wouldn’t need it all day but it would certainly be bad if it came out right in the middle of prom! I could just see it: My sister walking onto the stage and suddenly all her hair fell right out of the barrette! No, that would not be any good at all! So, the fact that this one was guaranteed to stay in was good!

The next was also available in three colors: black, white, and orange with little flecks of different colors in them. It was three little flowers on a barrette and guaranteed to hold thin hair. That was a particularly useful piece of information because my sisters hair had to be the finest hair I’d ever seen! I didn’t know how, because the rest of our family had really thick hair, but she had managed it. Another pro for these clips was that they came with their own little carrying bag, so they wouldn’t get lost. I couldn’t count how many times we’d lost barrettes because they were so small. Once you put them in the drawer, there was just no way to get them back! A carrying case for them would be very useful.

Our next selection was very cute. The barrette was made of Great Lakes Birdseye Maple, which was very pretty and apparently much sought after. The wood was very pleasing to the eye, with little bubbles of dark wood in between the attractive lines of the grain and there was a little jade butterfly, wings outstretched, in the middle of it. It also said that it would suit all hair types, so that was good!

After that an ebony barrette caught my sister’s eye and I had to admit that it was gorgeous. It was, of course, ebony wood but it had a pearl surrounded in a cute silver design right in the middle which was hand-made, to my surprise. I hadn’t known that someone would do something like that. It said that it would be good for putting up either part or all hair, especially if the hair was thin. Convenient!

The last barrette that we found was made of an amber wood and shone even in the picture. I thought it was rather attractive. Not too flashy but not plain either. It had a little oval with small gems surrounded by sterling silver in the middle which was particularly cute. It was said to look great when the light passed over it, which was also good because then when my sister got up on stage, or when they shined the spot-light on her, it would be dazzling!

In the end, my sister had picked our third choice because of its guarantee to hold thin hair and also that there were flowers of her dress. Not to mention the fact that she could put them all in the little bag in her purse if she wanted to and now have to worry about losing them. It was a very good deal and my sister was well pleased at the prom.
