In the beginning, perfume was used by the Egyptians; the perfume was used as part of their religious rituals. During this time, there were two basic methods of the use of perfume. One method was to burn incense and the second method was the application of ointments and balms. The perfumed oils were commonly used for medicinal or eithercosmetic purposes by applying the perfume oils to the skin. During the Middle and Old Kingdoms, perfumes were being exclusively reserved for cleansing ceremonies and other religious rituals that took place.
Around fifteen eight though ten eight five BC, during the times of the New Kingdom, perfumes were being used during festivals that took place and the Egyptian women were known to use the perfumed creams as well as oils as cosmetics or toiletries and as preludes to making love. After this time, the use of perfume traveled to Rome, Greece and the Islamic world. The Islamic community was the ones responsible for keeping the use of perfumes alive since the actual spread of the Christianity faith led straight to a major decline in the overall use of perfume.
The Eighteenth Century
During the eighteenth century, there was a revolutionary advance in the way that perfumes were created primarily because of the introduction of eau de Cologne. The eau de Cologne possessed a refreshing blend of neroli, lemon, rosemary and bergamot, which were used in many different ways. It was mixed with wine, diluted in bath water, used as mouthwash, eaten while on a sugar lump, used as an enema, used as an ingredient for poultice and it was injected directly. The variety of perfume containers that were used during the eighteenth century was as abundant as the fragrances and their individual uses.
There were sponges being soaked in vinaigres that were scented and that were kept secret in vinaigrettes that were made out of gilded metal. There were also liquid perfumes that came in elegant pear shaped bottles. In France, in seventeen sixty five at the introduction of the Baccarat Factory, the glass became increasingly popular. Just like with the arts and industry, during the nineteenth century, perfume underwent a profound change. The changes that took place with individual taste and the development of modern chemistry are what laid the foundation for perfumery just as we know it today.
The Package
In the beginning, the package that the perfume came in wasn’t really all that important. Now, there are all kinds of perfume boxes being designed to house the perfumes that are on the market today. If you were to go into a retail store today, you would see that there are perfume boxes made of every shape and décor. So now, there is not only an emphasis on the shape and color of the bottle, there is also an emphasis on the box that the perfume comes in as well. One of the main reasons that perfume boxes are so important is because nine times out of ten, perfumes are given to someone as a gift.
When you give someone a gift, you want to the gift to be in a really nice package, right? Now, you understand why retailers and perfume designers are stressing the appearance of the perfume boxes also.
The Hidden Treasure
Perfume Boxes each hold a special treasure that is meant to talk to the heart through a woman’s senses and a man’s senses. When a woman opens a gift and it is perfume, everything about that perfume has to be special. The perfume box has to be elegant and genuine so that it can give a slight glimpse of what is inside the box. The bottle has to express the way that the perfume will make you feel, if a perfume is going to make you feel young at heart and independent, the bottle will be brightly colored and in an unpredictable shape. The perfume itself has a way of exploring the body through the skin so that no part of the body goes untouched. |
