The well known Chanel Perfume known as Chanel No. 5 is absolutely one of the most popular perfumes in the entire world. Chanel No. 5 was the first fragrance that the Parisian couturier created, Gabrielle Chanel as referred to as “Coco”. Ernest Beaux was commissioned by Coco Chanel to create six perfumes. All of the perfumes that were created by Ernest Beaux were labeled by numbers, No. 1 all the way up to No. 6. The No.5 bottle was the one that met the Chanel’s liking and it became the formula that was chosen.
So, the number five was her lucky number. At the time of the perfume’s inception, jasmine was the most expensive oil used in the perfume because of the expensive distilling process that it had to go through. That still holds true to this very day. Chanel’s main objective was to create the most expensive perfume in the entire world and that is exactly what she done with Chanel No.5 because it relies heavily on the ingredient jasmine.
The History of Chanel No. 5
In the month of May on the fifth day of nineteen twenty one, Chanel introduced the perfume to her friends and it was given to her good clients at her boutique for free of charge. In order to create an ambience, the fitting rooms at Chanel’s boutique were also scented with the perfume, which went unmatched by other contemporaries. Abercrombie & Fitch, a retailer on the market today, still practices this original concept. In the year of nineteen twenty four, Coco Chanel partnered with Pierre Wertheimer. Pierre Wertheimer owned seventy percent and Coco only owner ten percent. The other twenty percent was owned by Bader, who was her friend.
The only reason that Chanel agreed to this agreement was because she would have complete control over her product for exchange of her owning such a small amount of the company. The Wertheimer family still runs the outstanding perfume business today.
The Style of Chanel No. 5
Chanel Perfume was created in order to give women a perfume that was artificial. This was Chanel’s main objective. Chanel didn’t want a perfume that smelled of roses or lilies; she wanted something that has to be made, something that is a composition. The Chanel Perfume is well known for being the very first perfume to rely heavily on a top note of synthetic floral aldehydes. Before there were synthetics, perfume had two options, it had to be applied in very heavy amounts before going out in order to ensure that it would last throughout that period of time or it had to be applied frequently over the period of time that you were out.
When Chanel produced perfumes, they applied the French aesthetic theory which was that “ugly” placed beside of “beautiful” in contrast would make a beautiful object appear even more beautiful. During this time period, all perfumes were considered pretty and floral which were designed especially for enhancing the beauty of a woman with more beauty. Coco, wanted to create a perfume that reflected her personality, a perfume that was unique and abstract instead of a perfume that consisted of scents of flowers. Coco also believed that the perfume a woman wears should serve the purpose of spotlighting the woman’s natural beauty by using contrast. The Chanel Perfume would make the natural beauty the woman possessed more evident.
