Turquoise Jewelry

In the 17th century men actually wore turquoise because it showed signs of a well dressed man.  As you can see Turquoise has had a major influence on society.

Turquoise jewelry is known for it’s most elegant and vibrant color, which is like a greenish blue mix.  Turquoise jewelry has been around for centuries, sometime linked with Native Americans.  It is believed that turquoise is the stone of life that has special magical and healing powers.  Turquoise is often looked at as a good luck charm.   In ancient times civilians would use turquoise to ward or evil spirits or create good luck. Persian traders wore turquoise so they can reap the magical and protective powers of the gemstone. For centuries people believed that turquoise had the ability to attract love, money and good luck.    Turquoise can also be considered a token of friendship and good relationships.   It can also be self-esteem booster, it is said when turquoise is given to a person to help boost self-confidence. The strong and vibrant colors of the stone have an impact on that person’s mood.

Like all other jewelry turquoise comes in all shapes and sizes, mostly in the form of earrings, necklaces, bracelets and pendants. Turquoise jewelry can be worn formally or casually.  Turquoise pendants and charms look exquisite on black or silver necklaces or bracelets.
Turquoise actually happens to be the birthstone for the month of December and for the 5th and 11th wedding anniversary tradition, it is said that one must give a gift of turquoise or something that has to do with turquoise.

One can find turquoise at their local jewelry store at an online one stop shop. However when shopping for turquoise, one must pay attention to detail and very close attention to the piece that they are purchasing, because turquoise can be hard to manage as far as cleaning purposes go.  Turquoise can change color, if not cared for in the right content.

To take good care of your turquoise you should avoid exposure to perfumes, oils, cosmetics, chemicals, sunlight or any other thing you feel will offset your precious gems’ precious color.   It is best to store your turquoise jewelry in a separate space away from your other jewelry since turquoise is a sensitive gem and can scratch easily.    There are four different types of turquoise that is sold today.

Natural- this is the turquoise that comes directly from the mine, it has not man made influence whatsoever. Therefore this type of stone will be cut and shaped and made into an elegant jewelry piece.

Stabilized- This is natural turquoise that does not hold luster.  It is put into a stabilizing compound which is cut and dried and than ready to become a jewelry piece. Sometimes this process can give a certain color to the stone.

Treated- This is used for enhancing the color by adding animal fat or vegetable oil to the stone.

Synthetic- synthetic or fake turquoise is usually made out of plastic, ceramics or bones. This process can produce a nice looking turquoise gem due to the fact that some actual turquoise stones are placed in the “batter” used to make the synthetic stones.

When searching for a turquoise piece there are different grades that one must look for.  When choosing the turquoise a consumer should be looking for the hardness, luster, color, matrix and rarity.   The testing process can range from giving the stone a very high grade to high grade, ranking the quality of the jewelry of how it looks and feels.  The cost of turquoise can vary from a low $20 up to a few hundred dollars.   It depends on the grade of the stone.  While one shops for turquoise he should remember the important tips of picking out the highest quality grade, and finding a  true gem, which is very rare but it will be worth the shot to own such an intricate piece of jewelry.
