Antique Jewelry is referred to any jewelry that is old or over 70- 100 years old.   Antique jewelry is jewelry that can be passed on for decades and centuries from generation to generation.   The different eras of history have shaped the different types of styles and designs of jewelry.   There was the Gregorian period from the late 1700’s to the mid 1800’s.  This era influenced many different styles of necklaces, brooches, Berlin iron and miniatures.
Berlin iron seems to be the most interesting piece of that time century.  During the war that was going on in Germany, citizens were asked to actually donate their most precious gold to help the economy of the war; in return they were given replicas of their jewelry mad out of black cast iron.

The different eras of man kind have definably shaped the pieces of the certain style of jewelry. Making antique jewelry a distinctive and genuine part of history.   During the  Victorian era from the mid 1800’s to the early 1900’s  stones such as amethyst, garnets, pearls, opals, coral and turquoise was introduced.  Most of the jewelry made in this time period was usually made from yellow or rose gold.

Antique jewelry has been around for centuries, influencing today’s modern trends. For example back in the Victorian period citizens would wear brooches and pendants with miniature portraits of their loved ones.  Nowadays we have lockets that we place a digital photo in.

During the Art Noveau period during the late 1800’s to the early 1900’s most jewelry pieces were inspired by touches of nature, so a lot of jewelry pieces that featured flowers and butterflies were present.

Another type of antique jewelry that came popular in the late 1800’s was black enamel, jet and onyx stones.  This type of jewelry was inspired by the death of Queen Victoria’s beloved husband Albert.  The citizens showed their deepest empathy by producing stones of mourning.

The era that was the shortest was known as the Edwardian era, during the 1901-1915.  The most popular designs were diamonds, pearls and platinum.

The great thing about antique jewelry is that most of the pieces are one-of kind designs, so it is very rare to find an antique jewelry piece that is the same as another.

Antique jewelry is still around today and passed on from generation to generations, however when someone is giving a piece of antique jewelry they should be sure to tell a little bit of history with it, since most antique jewelry matches a certain era in history.
